Full Moon – The Mars Effect

Full Moon – Just the phrase can make one think of wild reckless behavior, heightened emotions, chaos…

1MARWhile the stereotypical effects of Full Moon are exaggerated (to say the least) this is undoubtedly the astrological event with the most noticeable effects. And the coming Full Moon, Jan 29th, has potential to fit the ’stereotype’ better than most.

A Full Moon is – in astrological terms – an opposition. The Sun and Moon are at opposite points in the Zodiac. Oppositions create tension, sometimes force decisions, bring ongoing issues ‘to a head’ etc. On this particular day, the Sun is opposite not only the Moon, but Mars as well.

Mars is the planet if fire, aggression, enthusiasm, action and war. If there is ‘trouble brewing’ somewhere in your life – watch out for explosive events around Full Moon!

Mars is about action. He prompts us to do something now – think about it later. The planet of inner fire, he reminds us of our passions and furies. Rage, delight, enthusiasm… whatever you feel with all your being, whenever you feel immersed in the act of living, and consumed by the sheer vitality of life force – you are feeling Mars.

It’s easy to imagine how this can be a quite volatile influence, teaming up with the natural tension of Full Moon. Don’t, however, take this to mean the Mars influence is all bad. Like any aspect, it depends on what you make of it. Sometimes we need a strong dose of Mars – sometimes we need to shake things up a bit.

Ask yourself – Have you been avoiding difficult situations; feeling you needed to do something but avoiding it? Or perhaps feeling you ‘inner fire’ has been dampened, but not done anything to ignite it? If so, this particular Full Moon may be just what the doctor ordered!

This Moon, like any astrological event, will effect everyone a little (sometimes a lot) differently. It all depends on your chart, your current circumstances, and – of course – your free will. However, here’s a little general advice to navigate the bumpy terrain, not only unscathed, but quite possibly better off for it.

Look before you leap. Mars is a notoriously spontaneous influence. So is Full Moon. If you are stuck in a rut, lacking variety and excitement this can be a good thing. Spontaneity can be great if you feel compelled to dance for fun, or speak your mind instead of being a doormat. It’s not so great if you decide to sell your home or divorce your spouse without thinking it through.

Don’t sit on the sidelines and let your life happen to you. If you haven’t been taking an active role in your own life, this Moon will make you very well aware of the fact. Maybe it’s finally time to finally do something about ___ (you fill in the blank). However, again, think before you do.

Fuel your inner fire. This simple piece of advice really is at the heart of the Mars influence. He has more affinity with the Fire element than any other single planet. His current Zodiac position in Leo (a Fire sign) only intensifies that. That Fire element burns within each of us. Mars naturally speaks to that inner fire, even more so right now than usual. We are in the middle of a Mars retrograde. Like any retrograding planet, Mars energy turns inward during a retrograde.

What fuels your inner fire? What makes you feel strong, vibrant – most of all alive? These are the best subjects to work with (or work on), magickally this Full Moon.

You will probably find it is very easy to build and intensify your natural power with just a little focus on whatever it is that gets your inner fire burning. Building power, making changes, endings, and prompting action are the most productive endeavors under this Moon.

This is a powerful, and volatile, Full Moon. You may be surprised at what you can do with it – just remember to look before you leap or it may be an unpleasant surprise in the long run.
